Most visitors don’t realise Auckland is bracketed by two enormous regional parks \u2014 the Waitakere Ranges to the west and the Hunua Ranges to the south \u2014 plus a harbour full of walkable volcanic islands. All of the walks below are inside 90 minutes’ drive of the city, ideal for anyone renting a car in Auckland for a few days.<\/p>

West: Waitakere Ranges<\/h2>

1. Karekare Falls & Beach loop<\/h3>

~2 hours \u00b7 easy\u2013moderate<\/p>

Combine the short falls walk with a stroll onto the wild black-sand beach where The Piano<\/em> was filmed. Kauri dieback stations at every entry \u2014 clean your shoes.<\/p>

2. Fairy Falls Track<\/h3>

~1.5 hours return \u00b7 easy<\/p>

Cascade waterfall through native bush. Great for families and photographers.<\/p>

3. Mercer Bay Loop<\/h3>

~1 hour \u00b7 easy \u00b7 clifftop<\/p>

Short, spectacular, and often overlooked. Sunset here is unbeatable.<\/p>

4. Te Henga Walkway<\/h3>

~4 hours one-way \u00b7 moderate<\/p>

Coastal ridgeline between Bethells and Muriwai. Wildflowers in spring, gannets year-round.<\/p>

East and inner harbour<\/h2>

5. Rangitoto Summit<\/h3>

~3.5 hours \u00b7 ferry from downtown<\/p>

600-year-old volcano. Walk up through lava fields to a 360\u00b0 summit view of the Hauraki Gulf. Take the ferry from the CBD \u2014 no rental needed for this one.<\/p>

6. Motutapu \u2192 Rangitoto crossing<\/h3>

~5 hours \u00b7 easy \u00b7 beach + volcano<\/p>

Ferry to Motutapu, walk across the causeway to Rangitoto, summit, ferry back from Rangitoto Wharf.<\/p>

South: Hunua Ranges<\/h2>

7. Hunua Falls Loop<\/h3>

25 m waterfall an hour south of the CBD. Extend on the Cossey’s Gorge track for a proper half-day walk.<\/p>

8. Wairoa Loop Track<\/h3>

~4 hours \u00b7 moderate<\/p>

Fewer people, more birdsong. The best of Hunua if you want quiet.<\/p>

North: Mahurangi & Whangapar\u0101oa<\/h2>

9. Shakespear Regional Park Coastal Loop<\/h3>

~3 hours \u00b7 easy \u00b7 Whangapar\u0101oa<\/p>

Pest-free sanctuary \u2014 expect takah\u0113, t\u012beke and quails on the track. Beaches on both sides.<\/p>

10. Wenderholm Puhoi Track<\/h3>

~2.5 hours \u00b7 easy \u00b7 North<\/p>

Coastal + native bush combo, an hour north of the city. Perfect stop en route to Northland.<\/p>

Public transport reaches almost none of these \u2014 a rental is by far the easiest way.
