Freedom CampSites Around Auckland

Maraetai Beach

Situated east of Auckland, Maraetai Beach provides a coastal haven for freedom campers, offering beautiful beaches, rolling hills, and a relaxed atmosphere. This freedom camping site is only 5 minutes from us and provides the most convenient camping spot for your first day along with some cafes and restaurants for your morning coffee.

There are two parking options:

Colson Lane, Maraetai

A maximum of two self-contained vehicles can stay overnight in the area designated for freedom camping and need vacate by 9am.

Maraetai Coast Road, Maraetai

A maximum of two self-contained vehicles can stay overnight in the area designated for freedom camping and need vacate by 9am.

Gulf Harbour Marina Hammerhead Reserve

40 Gulf Harbour Drive, Gulf Harbour

A maximum of ten self-contained vehicles can stay overnight in the area designated for freedom camping and need vacate by 9am.

Hamiltons Gap:

Nestled on the rugged west coast of the Awhitu Peninsula, Hamiltons Gap offers a remote beachside escape and is our favourite campsite around Auckland. Basic facilities, including a public toilet, make this spot perfect for those looking to disconnect and embrace nature.

Roadside carpark opposite Western Springs Reserve:

820 Great North Road, Grey Lynn

Conveniently located in central Auckland, this roadside carpark provides an urban camping experience with easy access to Western Springs Reserve and its scenic surroundings.

Taumanu Reserve (Onehunga Foreshore)

Orpheus Drive, Onehunga

A maximum of five self-contained vehicles can stay overnight in the area designated for freedom camping for maximum of one night need to vacate the parking space by 9am on the second day.=

Cox’s Bay Esplanade:

West End Road, Herne Bay

A maximum of three self-contained vehicles can stay overnight in the area designated for freedom camping for maximum of one night need to vacate the parking space by 9am on the second day.

Barry Curtis Park:

63 Chapel Road, Flat Bush

For an urban setting without sacrificing the freedom camping experience, Barry Curtis Park in Flat Bush is the ideal choice. Enjoy designated camping areas and lush green spaces within the city limits.

A maximum of 10 self-contained vehicles can stay overnight in the area designated for freedom camping for a maximum of 2 nights.

Moore Street carpark

27 Moore Street, Howick

A maximum of seven self-contained vehicles can stay overnight in the area designated for freedom camping for maximum of one night need to vacate the parking space by 9am on the second day.

Uxbridge Road carpark

20-24 Uxbridge Road, Howick

A maximum of seven self-contained vehicles can stay overnight in the area designated for freedom camping for maximum of one night need to vacate the parking space by 9am on the second day.

Hingaia Reserve

Near 380 Hingaia Road, Hingaia

A maximum of five self-contained vehicles can stay overnight in the area designated for freedom camping for maximum of one night and need to vacate the parking space by 9am on the second day.

Ray’s Rest Reserve / Kaiaua Beach:

Kaiaua Reserve is located just 5 minutes north of Ray’s Rest. Both sites offer beautiful freedom camping right on the wate edge with views over Coromandel. We usually prefer to stay at the Kaiaua Beach as this one has a playground as well as great coffee within walking distance.

Snells Beach:

70 Kokihi Lane, Snells Beach & 12 Sunburst Avenue, Snells Beach 

Experience freedom camping at Sunburst Avenue Snells Beach, where the golden sands and coastal beauty create a perfect backdrop.

Parry Kauri Park:

32 Tudor Collins Drive, Warkworth

Immerse yourself in nature at Parry Kauri Park, a peaceful spot surrounded by native flora and fauna.

Port Albert Wharf Reserve car park

32 Tudor Collins Drive, Warkworth

Regional Park Campsites Around Auckland

Ōmana

Ōmana Regional Park provides outstanding views of the inner Hauraki Gulf and only 5 minutes from us.

Ātiu Creek

414 Run Road, Tapora

Designated parking area self contained campervan or motorhomex only. You can stay one night during summer (daylight saving) and three nights during winter (non-daylight saving).

Ambury Regional Park

43 Ambury Road, Māngere Bridge

This local farm park lies among the southern suburbs facing the Manukau Harbour.

Take in various farm animals as you wander around the open pasture and enjoy this significant habitat for shorebirds.

This site offers 10 hardstands over the winter (non-daylight saving) months only, for stays up to seven nights for certified self-contained vehicles only. Maximum of one vehicle per booking.

Āwhitu

Brook Road, Awhitu

Brooke Campground

Designated parking area forcertified self-contained campervan or motorhome only located in the main car park. You can stay for up to 7 nights. Closed (31 May to 30 September).

$17.00 per adult / $6.50 per child

Āwhitu CSC overnight parking area at Āwhitu Regional Park

Self Contained vehicles can stay for one night in the designated parking area. During winter (non-daylight saving), you can stay up to three nights when the Brook campground and Peninsula Campgrounds are closed.

Peninsula campground

This campground is on a headland overlooking the Manukau Harbour. It is very basic with grass surface, toilets, barbecues and drinking water nearby. Maximum Stay 7 nights (1 October to 30 May).
Closed (31 May to 30 September).

Huia Barn Paddock

Huia Road, Huia

Designated level gravel parking next to the Barn Paddock campground located near the quiet settlement of Huia by the Manukau Harbour.

For certified self-contained campervan or motorhome only. You can stay in the designated area for one night in the summer (daylight saving) and up to three nights during winter (non-daylight saving).

$17.00 (GST inclusive)

Mahurangi Regional Park Sullivan’s Bay

192 Ngarewa Drive, Mahurangi West

Self Contained vehicles can stay for up to three nights. 

A flat grass area with trees located at Sullivan’s Bay.

This campground has marked designated sites, where campers must camp.

Individual sites cannot be booked – camp in any unoccupied site.
