Our Favourite Freedom Camping Spots on the North Island of New Zealand

Not only do we hire our Campervans out, we also love travelling in them. Whenever possible, we try to find a freedom camping spot in some beautiful scenery. So here we share our top 5 Freedom Camping Spots on the North Island so far (list might change as we explore new places).

Our absolute favourite place to go!!! Otaki Beach offers freedom camping really beachfront camping. A large stretch along the beach gives enough space for all campers without encroaching on the privacy. Hear the sound of the waves crashing, take out the fishing rod or just wind out the awning and watch the magical sunsets with a glass of wine in your hand.

Definitely our second favourite place and so close to home. Hamiltons Gap is on the Awhitu Peninsula, only an hour from Auckland CBD and offers spectacular freedom camping. Large grassy areas, toilet facilities and a beautiful long beach make it a great place to escape for a night or two without having to travel far. Enjoy beautiful sunsets and absolute peace and quiet.

Another beachfront spot not far from home. Rays Rest is not far from Miranda Springs and again offers beachfront camping. Lots of space, great for bird watching and beautiful views over to Coromandel Pensinsula make it a great escape.

About 30 Minutes north of Taupo, Whakamaru Camping Ground offers amazing spacious freedom camping right on the shores of the Waikato River. The campsite stretches over several kilometers along the shores, so you privacy is guaranteed. There are great toilet blocks and BBQ areas are available as well.

Admittedly, the actual freedom parking spot at the end of Pukehina Beach is not the most amazing, as it is pretty much just a car park BUT the parking spot is overlooking the Lake Waihi Estuary on one side and on the beautiful long Pukehina Beach on the other side. As this is a cul de sac, there is relatively low traffic and the spot is pretty quiet. It is the perfect place to take the camping chairs down to the beach to relax or take the kayak or Stand Up Paddel Board out and paddle along the Waihi Estuary.  There is a reasonably clean toilet block and grassy area by the parking bays to put out your table and chairs. The spot is very flat, so no chocks required, but be early as there are only 6 designated freedom camping sites available.
